Easy, doesn’t move, no brainer for use with Gramin Sat Nav.Looks good, doesn’t move about your dashboard, just need a flat area to place it, but well worth it, Top Knotch.

Friction mount works great, just put it on the dashboard. Much easier to use than the suction clip that comes with the GPS unit, and doesn’t leave the telltale mark on the windshield that cues thieves that you have a GPS unit in the car. This is an essential accessory.

This weighted friction mount works much better than the windshield mount included with my Garmin nuvi 660 and the optional sticky dashboard mount I bought separately (It fell off when I went around the first corner after mounting it!). The weighted mount never moved throughout a recent 4,500 mile trip other than when I moved it out of sight when we parked.

Excellent accessory for Garmin Nuvi. Able to easily move to and from dash to store out of sight when parked. Easy to move on dash so passenger can view and access screen or place in front of driver. No need to mess with windshield mount. Highly recommend this product.Garmin Portable Friction Dashboard Mount for Nüvi Series and StreetPilot I Series, C530, C550 and C580 GPS Navigators

We have used the Garmin Portable Dashboard Mount on two recent trips and have found it to provide a very stable base for the GPS. Even when traveling over some bumpy roads it continued to work well. While the base does not slip on the dash it can be moved and stowed easily with or without the GPS attached.

Your Laptop Repair Service What To Expect

When your laptop suddenly won’t boot up, or that full cup of coffee you just poured yourself gets spilt over your laptop keyboard. How do you go about getting it fixed? Where do you take it? Whoever you take it to, your trusting somebody you don’t know to mess with what is probably a very sacred object to you — Well, here’s a few tips to help you on your way.

Where to get it fixed?

You could send it back to the manufacturers, each laptop company has a service department, but expect to pay 450-500 to replace a cracked screen, or 700-900 to replace a faulty motherboard. Your local computer shop may be able to help, but most laptop repairs require specialist knowledge which they may not have. There are a number of laptop repair companies to be found on the internet. Just searching for ‘laptop repair’ on the internet will bring you a long list of companies willing to do the work for you. In most cases whichever way you go, unless you very lucky to have one close by, this means sending/having collected, your laptop for repair.

Services and pricing

Laptop repair companies should clearly describe their repair service prices, ensuring that there are no hidden fees. Prices should be displayed, and preferably be a flat fee depending on the repair type. Most repair companies now days will look at your laptop for free and offer a diagnosis and estimate for repair, you may well have to pay postage costs, if you turn down the repair. But that seems fair.

LAPTOP repair warranties?

Any repair company has a duty by law to warranty their work. How long this warranty lasts is dependent on the laptop repair company, but should be no less than 6 months. Ensure that the warranty period is clearly written on any invoices, before you pay them. Ask them about their returns policy, for instance, who pays the collection/delivery costs if the unit fails again with the same fault within the warranty period?

How long should it take?

This largely depends on the availability of parts, for common makes like Dell, Sony, Samsung and compaq, parts are usually in plentiful supply. But if your unlucky enough to have let’s say a ‘Multivision’ (They’re now defunct), unless you stumble across an independent laptop repair firm that has a secondhand part, you can expect a long delay, if indeed the parts can be sourced. But for a ‘bread and butter’ repair, let’s say, ‘replacing the screen on a Dell inspiron’ look to a maximum 7 days. Most repair places whoever they are should be able to achieve the repair in this amount of time.

Building Your Own Computer First Time Jitters

One statement I’ve made over and over in my writings, and every time I speak on the topic of computers, is that there are only 11 major parts in a PC. If you think you can connect just eleven items, then you can build your own.

Recently a gentleman who was interested in building a computer wrote to me. In his letter he said, “I opened up the side of my old machine just to see what it looked like in there. I wanted to get an idea of how complicated it was before I tried building one myself. There were cables going every which way. Are you sure there are only eleven items to connect?”

After a bit of questioning back and forth by email, we determined that my new friend had a very early Pentium that had served him well through the years. In the era of his computer, virtually every port on the back of the case had to connect to the motherboard by means of a ribbon cable. I was building computers back then, and it was a bit like wrestling a squid.

Now, all of those ports are hard-wired to the motherboard, as can be seen in my book “Building a PC for Beginners”. There’s no more trying to plug in everything in a three square inch area. The inside of a computer is much less congested, making the assembly process way simpler than it was.

Another great step to simplify things took place when case and motherboard manufacturers agreed on standardizing screw hole locations. Now you can be sure that the holes for the standoffs that support the motherboard will match with the holes in the case. At one time this wasn’t so.

Pandora Tomorrow X Box Guide

Introduction

Pandora Tomorrow is one of the most interesting and enchanting video game play delivered in the Tom Clancys Splinter Cell series. The game was originally titled as the Shadow Strike and was later renamed as Pandora Tomorrow. The game is an external player oriented Stealth-based video game that has already gained popularity. This game is the second in the series of video games of Splinter Cell.

What the game provides

As in case of other games in the Splinter Cell series, here also the hero is Sam Fisher, the lone splinter from Third Echelon. Voiced by popular TV artist Michael Ironside, the character Sam Fisher works for the black ops branch of NSA and indulge in covert activities in the line of a James Bond. The background music is provided in the video game by Lalo Schifrin and the popularity of the game is quite evident from the fact that it has been translated in multiple languages and distributed all over the world.

The game play

Although the name has been changed, the game play remains nearest to the original Splinter Cell game. A few graphical improvements have been inserted here and there. Minute game play changes have been affected too. For example the collectible health kits are no longer an inventory item. Another such example of minor game play change is the addition of a laser sight to the pistol that Sam carries. Sam Fisher can now open a door while carrying a body on his back. He can shoot hanging in a reverse pose and can also perform a jump that is half split.

The multiplayer version

Originally the Pandora Tomorrow was a single player game. But one notable change has been introduced lately by converting it to a multi player game because it can accrue the advantages provided by the popular Xbox Live device. Even the Play Station 2 and Personal Computer versions have also been made multiplayer compatible. But the Game Cube version continues to be a single player one. The two combatants in the fray are very well equipped and armed mercenaries against stealthy Shadownet spies. Mercenaries are played as first person and spies are played as third person. The charm of the game is that mercenaries have fast shooting power but spies can hide in the dark and attack with stealthy moves. In some cases they may just sneak past the mercenaries. The maximum number of players that can participate in a multi player game is limited to four players. There are three versions of multiplayer game in Pandora Tomorrow. The first one is Neutrilization in which the spy tries to deactivate the devices and mercenaries try to protect it. The second one is Extraction where the spy tries to locate the ND133s and mercenaries try to protect it killing the spies. The third and last one is the Sabotage where a modem is to be placed near the wall where the ND 133s are located that would neutralize the device when the timer on the modem stops. Spies try to place the mode, and mercenaries try to prevent it by killing the spies.

The story

Finally, we may have a brief glimpse of the story on which the game is based. The curtain raises at Indonesia 2006 where the militant leaders Darah Dan Doa and Suhadi Sadono have planned a suicide bombing of the U.S military base. The task of Sam Fisher is here in two phases, first infiltrating U.S Embassy and retaking it by Delta Force and then tracking down Sadono in Indonesian soil. Fisher finally finds Sadono and the bomb and Shadownet spies are deputed to neutralize it and catch Sadono alive. Fisher succeeds but is entrusted a further assignment to trace and eliminate Norman Soth, a CIA defector. How? You will know by playing the Pandora Tomorrow yourself.

Had a bit of a problem getting my Garmin Street Pilot 2720 to accept the update initially. Called Garmin Tech Support and found them to be very helpful. I did have to wait on hold for awhile, but the friendly and upbeat Kansas based support tech made several suggestions to get me beyond error messages relating to "communication errors". The one that did the trick was updating the operating system for the unit (from the Garmin website) before again attempting the update from the disk. I can’t claim improved data accuracy yet because I just did the update, but my feeling is that I’ve come to rely on this unit so heavily I figure it’s worth the cost to insure it’s working off the most accurate information. By the way, Garmin claims the update may take up to 2 hours to complete and I believe it was probably about that long, so be prepared to have your computer tied up for awhile. In my opinion Garmin makes fine products and supports them well, including this update.

I have a Zumo 550 and the Map upload went off without a hitch in slightly less time than estimated. I used my Zumo on vacation this week with good results. Just one trip into the boonies, I think to avoid a traffic signal. I got where I was going but that detour seemed unnecessary.

Good product. Works well. Isn’t as up to date as I would have liked.

Garmin uses the maps from Navteq. They are very good, among the best digital maps available. This years map is better than last years map, but only marginally so. And the POIs (Points of Interest) have been updated, too, but don’t be surprised when you try to find a Wendy’s Restaurant listed and find it was closed 12 months ago. It happens, not frequently, but it happens.

New streets, even those that opened a year ago, may not have been added. That is the nature of the Map business. They can only work on certain areas of the map, and they may have not been able to get around to the road change in the area in which you are traveling. But many of the new streets have been added.

All in all, this is a better map than last years, which was a better map than the one the year before, which was a better map … well, you get the idea.

If you need as accurate a map as possible for your Garmin, get this one. And if the map in your Garmin is more than couple of years old, get this one. But you may not need or want to upgrade from your 2008 map … wait a year or two. Besides, you may decide to purchase a new GPS with better features 6 months from now.

I’ve rated this 5 stars because it is that good compared to other digital maps on other GPS systems. But it is not perfect, and you may not need it.

By the way, while the installation is not difficult, it takes an hour or two to actually install, so be prepared. Don’t expect to start installation and be on the road with it 10 minutes after you start. It ain’t gonna happen.

Why Network Documentation Is So Important

Undocumented Networks

————
I can’t tell you how many projects I’ve worked on in which
the customer has little to no network documentation. The
reason for the lack of network documentation is varied. In
many cases this is both the fault of the customer and the
vendor / consultant who designed and implemented the
network. The vendor just does not do it and the customer
does not press hard enough for it. In some cases, technology
consultants do not feel it’s important enough or want to
lock the customer into having to call “them” if something
goes wrong or a configuration needs to be changed.

Not only is this poor practice on the side of the
consultant, it can have a dramatic affect on the future
growth of the customer, increase the costs of future network
upgrades and diagnostics, and can negatively impact the
security of the customers network.

The Results Of A Undocumented Network

————
Before I tell you the basic items that need to be documented
with regards to computer networks, I first want to give you
examples of what I have “not” seen documented, and what
problems this has caused.

During one of my past projects, which was primarily to
implement a new firewall and to secure many of the internal
systems , I ran into some really incredible issues. None of
the primary server systems were documented. No one knew what
server did what, how much memory, disk space, what type of
processor(s), and in some cases, did not know what Operating
System was installed. And worse than that, during my initial
review, we located three servers in a closet, on a different
floor, that no one even knew existed!

Because of the lack of network documentation, no one knew
what was suppose to be done to maintain their enterprise
Anti-Virus system. When I finally determined what the admin
password was to login to the Anti-Virus services, I found
that virus signatures had not been updated in over six
months. Then we found that the system was not even
functioning and nearly 90% of systems on the network were
infected with virus and worms (and not the annoying kind
either, the destructive kind)

We also found there were four different tape backup servers,
and again, because of the lack of network documentation,
none of them had been maintained. The customer just kept
changing tapes. And do you know what, none of the backup
jobs had been running for months. Talk about a false sense
of security!

The very last thing I want to talk about is how lack of
network documentation and procedures can affect network
security. In one case, a customer had a rather expensive
Check Point Firewall in place. No documentation was
available and the customer had been told that nothing needed
to be done to maintain the Firewall. The customer told me
that recently, their Internet access had become very
sluggish. It took two days to locate the Check Point console
password. When I logged in I found that the C: drive had
absolutely no free disk space because the Firewall log had
consumed it all. This could have been avoided if the
Firewall was setup properly in the first place. The Firewall
was also about 4 Service Packs behind, and the rules in
place were quite inadequate. Not to mention that none of the
rules themselves had been documented. And one more thing to
think about. If this network had been attacked and
compromised, how quickly would we have been able to respond
to the attack if so much of the network was undocumented? It
would have been a disaster.

Basic Network Documentation

————
Here is a basic set of items that should be contained in
network documentation:

All server hardware and operating systems should be
documented, including the physical locations and what
primary, secondary, etc.. purpose they serve. All key
service accounts an login account user-id and password’s
should be documented and stored in a safe location, maybe a
company lockbox or vault, or use something like KeyPass to
store them. A visual diagram of the network layout, even
from a high level, should exist no matter how small or large
the network is. Products like WhatsUpGold can assist with
this or you can create a Visio diagram of the network.
Procedures on how to maintain the network technology,
including Operating Systems, security related services,
backup and disaster recovery (business continuity), and
firewall technologies should exist.

Additionally, you should
document and secure all Operating System and application
licensing. This is something that is very often overlooked
and is imperative if you have to recover from a disaster
situation in which the rebuild of systems is necessary.
Other information to have documented is key contact
information. For instance, who do you call if your Internet
connection goes down? Who do you contact if your offsite web
services are not functioning? Do you have a third party that
maintains your Domain Name Services (DNS)? If you have
custom applications, do you know exactly who you must call
if there is a problem?

The above is just the basic items that need to be documented
within a computer network. There are many more aspects to
network documentation.

Who Needs To Document Their Network

————
In a nutshell, anyone who has a computer network, home
office, small office, or large office, should have an
adequate level of network documentation and procedures to
follow in order to maintain the network. If you have
invested in network technology, don’t you want to keep your
investment safe, sound, and performing at it’s peak?

Conclusion

————
If you are a customer, and have a systems integrator or
consultant working on a new network implementation or
upgrading an existing one, demand that they provide you with
complete network documentation. Even if it costs you extra
you should request it. It will save you a lot of time and
money in the future. And, it may actually keep your business
from experiencing long periods of down time.
